Judy Greenberg
Judy Greenberg grew up in New York City and was raised in a single parent household. Her undergraduate studies focused on Cultural Anthropology and Latin American studies.
She worked in Outward Bound adaptive wilderness programs with drug addicted and at risk youth/youth involved in the justice system. She also spent countless summers working at a Quaker wilderness camp as a counselor and wilderness trip leader; the same camp she attended for many summers growing up.
She attended Antioch New England Graduate School where she completed both an M.Ed in Guidance and Counseling as well as an MA in Counseling Psychology and became a Licensed Psychologist. Soon after becoming licensed she completed training in EMDR: a highly effective and efficient trauma treatment that was fairly new at the time, and this was the beginning of her deep interest in, and passion for, studying Trauma and the impact it has on us. Judy has a passion for helping people understand trauma and learn how to recover. And, she is deeply committed to teaching people who work with trauma impacted populations how to better understand the dynamics inherent in the people they are working with. Judy’s teaching provides a clearer understanding of trauma-survivors’ lived experience, so that the work professionals do together and on behalf of trauma-survivors is based on humanity, dignity and respect and causes no further harm but actually empowers healing and recovery.
Judy worked as a mental health counselor and consultant for World Learning’s Graduate School for International Training for seven years. During this time she provided direct mental health support to graduate students from around the world as well as consulting with staff and faculty. She supported the mental health and well being of one thousand college students on eighty different semester abroad programs at any given time supporting staff and faculty through crises and disasters. She also provided staff training and support for The Experiment in International Living: the oldest study abroad program for high school students in the USA.
As a trauma expert and mental health counselor for USAID Staff Care Center, Judy travelled to multiple USAID missions overseas after a crisis or critical incident to provide direct mental health services to USAID staff and family members as well as consult with senior management and USAID mission leadership on trauma and recovery. Judy has continued that work with many international humanitarian aid organizations with a case load of employees and managers working overseas.
Her recent work involves pro bono staff training and consultation for a refugee resettlement organization, a grassroots project supporting asylum seekers, and work with U.S.-based immigration lawyers.
Her training has included the great honor and privilege of working extensively with the top Trauma experts in the field including Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk, Dr. Ricky Greenwald , Dr. Eric Gentry, and Deb Dana, MSW.
When Judy is not educating and supporting teams that work with trauma-affected populations, she enjoys time with her family, wilderness adventures that include mountains and rivers, weight lifting and eating dark chocolate.
Over her career, Judy has supported staff members and leadership in the following organizations:
A Note from Judy
This work gives me hope. It also allows me to feel like I can make this world, in a small, little way, a bit better and alleviate a tiny bit of suffering. For me, this helps counteract the helpless and powerless feeling I sometimes experience in the face of so much suffering. I am deeply passionate about sharing the knowledge I have been so fortunate to have been able to pursue. As the granddaughter of four immigrants, two of whom landed on these shores unable to read or write, I feel a great honor to share the expertise I have gained with the most vulnerable amongst us. And, to those of us who work with them. I am committed to making this knowledge understandable and useful and my greatest hope is that it empowers others and helps others recover and heal.
